‘Brilliant study of the negative space left when an iconic rock star is gone’

Dr Dominic Camus – 5 stars

I began this expecting something along the lines of Iain Banks’ “Espedair Street”. In some ways it turns out to be exactly the opposite: a brilliant study of the negative space left when an iconic rock star is gone…

…but that’s only the outer layer. The characters of the book are treated in an unusual way, with plenty of time spent exploring the lives and perspectives of people who in any other story might be peripheral characters. This isn’t some sort of literary exercise – as the book unfolds each character we meet has their role to play in shaping events. Indeed, it isn’t so much a linear story of a sequence of events as it is an exploration of how people’s motivations, actions and inaction shape the world around them.
